A chance to see how organic farming works for a Lake County family farm will be held next Thursday, July 25th. Charlie Johnson – who was named the 2013 Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (or MOSES) Organic Farmer of the Year – is hosting the tour at Johnson Farms, near Saint Peter Lutheran Church in southern Lake County. He said there will be some short presentations by the three sponsoring organizations, along with local representatives from the county’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. These will start at 8:30 at the church before the tour begins at 10:00 on Thursday morning.
Johnson said that Johnson Farms is a general partnership that includes his younger brother, Allan, and his cousin, Aaron, along with part-time help from other family members. Together they have several different aspects to their farming operation.
Johnson said the farm’s selection as Organic Farmer of the Year prompted the tour to be held there this year. He said it is a great honor to have been recognized.
Johnson Farms is a third-generation family farm that has been under organic management since 1976.
People wanting to attend the organic row crops farm tour at Johnson Farms are asked to register in order to reserve a free lunch. If you don’t register, you will need to pay 15-dollars for lunch that day. To register, call 715-778-5775, e-mail harriet@mosesorganic.org, or go to their website.
