SDRA Domestic Violence & the Workplace Seminar

2nd Street Diner

The South Dakota Retailers Association is partnering with the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault to present a seminar on the topic of domestic violence, how it impacts the workplace, and the policies and procedures that employers should have for dealing with potential situations involving violence. The programs will be held in Madison on November 6.

"Nearly 15,000 individuals receive services annually at shelters and crisis centers for domestic violence and/or sexual assault crimes in South Dakota," says Krista Heeren-Graber, Director of the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault. "Many of the 15,000 are working in our state and the employers may not have any idea what is happening when those employees go home at night. Businesses can provide assistance to the employees, but also have a responsibility to keep everyone safe on the job. Through education and continued awareness, we can make South Dakota a safer place to live."

Shawn Lyons, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association says that domestic violence can have a major impact on the workplace, so it's important for employers to learn more about the issue, and what their role should be.

"We know that a person who is unsafe in their personal life is more likely to have higher absenteeism rates, to have problems with confidence and self-esteem, and to have lower productivity rates than other employees," notes Lyons. "That in turn affects everyone around them. Employers need to be alert for signs of domestic violence. They also need to be prepared for potential problems from the violent partner, and to have policies and procedures in place for dealing with those situations. These seminars will help employers develop those kinds of guidelines."

There is no cost to attend the seminar, however an rsvp is requested: 256-2454.

The presenters at the program will include a representative from the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault, law enforcement personnel who are experienced in dealing with domestic violence issues, and an attorney who will address legal issues pertaining to employers.
