Light Geese Season

Hunters will have a daily limit of 20-geese for the special spring season on light geese that opened over the weekend in South Dakota.

The season, called a conservation order differs from a regular hunting season because it is intended to reduce an overabundance of snow geese, blue geese and Ross'geese. The population has grown so large that it is destroying its nesting habitat.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department says hunters have killed around 105 thousand light geese in each of the past four spring seasons.

Lake County Conservation Officer Brandon Gust says the light geese probably won't arrive in Lake County for a week or so.

Hunters can use electronic calls, shotguns capable of carrying more than three shells and can hunt from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
