Aflatoxins Found in Several SD Counties

A number of counties in South Dakota have reported cases of aflatoxins, a mold that can be deadly to livestock, in their corn. Miner County SDSU Extension Educator Jim Krantz says checking corn with a blacklight wont specifically detect aflatoxins, but it will show if other kinds of molds are present.

According to Krantz, the mold hasnt reached Lake or Miner counties, but that could all change in a short period of time.

Krantz says testing can be done to check for the deadly mold.

Anyone who suspects their corn could be affected by aflatoxins are encouraged to call their local extension office to get more information about testing.
