PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A legislative committee says taking South Dakota's four technical institutes out of the hands of local school boards is a bad move. The House Education Committee voted 14-1 on Monday to kill HB1269, a proposal to give state government greater control over the schools. Technical institutes are located in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Watertown and Rapid City. Supporters of the change said it could give technical schools a better chance at state funding and a more uniform statewide mission. Opponents said the shift might cost the schools support from local school districts and local businesses.
