On August 8, 2009, Lake County Communications received a 911 call around 3:30pm for a swimmer that had gone underwater. Three boys, 2 of them brothers and the other a cousin walked out on the sand bar from Walker's Point and then swam to the North. The witnesses described the water as normal with some small waves but the under current to the NOrth of the sand bar had created an under current which pulled the boys further into deeper water. The victim, eighteen year old Dylan Neslon of Madison, was able to rescue his cousin from the deep water and bring him closer to shore and also was assisted by a passing Jet Ski bringing him to safety. Dylan than swam back out for his brother, Andrew Nelson rescuing him with the assistance of the Jet Ski. Due to fatigue and the water, Dylan wasn't able to make it to shore and later drowned. Dylan was recovered with the assistance of special sonar equipment and divers Saturday Evening around 10:30pm.
Agencies from Lake County Sheriff's office, Madison, Wentworth and Chester Fire Departments, Lake County and Minnehaha County Search and Rescue, SD Game Fish and Parts and the South Dakota Highway patrol assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts.
