Domestic Violence Network Needs Volunteers and Permanent Shelter

The Domestic Violence Network provides services to those who are victims of domestic violence in Madison. The group formed in August 2008 when the House of Hope announced that it would be closing.

The Domestic Violence Network incorporated last October. Work to continue support services began immediately with a partnership with Flandreau's shelter, which is called The Wholeness Center. Through that partnership, Advocate Lois Niedert made herself available.

A temporary safe-house has already been used at least once. Niedert said the shelter they are looking for could be available for rent or purchase, and grant funding is available from South Dakota Housing if the home meets the criteria of being in foreclosure and vacancy.

In 2009 the group will move forward to establish a crisis phone number, provide training for volunteers on answering crisis calls, and find a permanent shelter option.

Once trained volunteers are available to take calls the crisis number will become readily available.

The second annual tour of tables will be held on Nov. 7th, in the basement of the United Methodist Church. Reservations are being accepted for table hosts and hostesses who will sell tickets for their tables, provide dessert and provide a door prize.
