Claire LaFleur, a junior at Madison High School, has been chosen to attend the first annual National Honor Concert Choir in Washington, D.C., June 24-28.
The event is sponsored by the National Association for Music Education and represents outstanding student performers from throughout the nation. The concert, which will also include a concert band and jazz orchestra, will be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
LaFleur is one of only eight vocal music students from South Dakota.
"She is a delightful student to have because she works hard. I'm thrilled and happy for her," said Jenn Richards, vocal music instructor at MHS. "She has a beautiful voice and really enjoys singing."
"This is a unique opportunity for Claire to perform in the nation's capital," said Chris Meeker, producer for the National Association for Music Education. "The concert will showcase the most talented students from our nation's school music programs."
LaFleur, daughter of Ted and Dee Dee LaFleur, was a member of All-State Choir, Show Choir and Jazz Choir, plays piano and sings at church. She maintains a 3.9 grade point average and plans to become a music education major when she attends college. She will also be a delegate to Girl's State this year.
LaFleur must pay her own expenses to attend the event and currently is seeking support from individuals and community organizations. Richards said that expenses associated with the trip are $700, plus air fare. LaFleur hopes to raise her money by April 15. One of the ways LaFleur is raising money is by selling flower plants and bulbs. Individuals interested may call 256-1553 or e-mail lafleur57042@yahoo.com.
While in Washington, LaFleur will spend three days in rehearsals and performances. The concert choir consists of 82 members and will be conducted by Andre Thomas. Choir members will also visit historical sites around Washington, including the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, Iwo Jima and Vietnam memorials, World War II Memorial and the Capitol building.
