Food Stamp Challenge

How healthy can a person eat on a food stamp budget? That question might be answered during South Dakota Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, beginning this Monday. Cathy Brechtelsbauer with Bread for the World is hoping South Dakota residents will take the "South Dakota Food Stamp Challenge" to raise awareness about the struggles that many low-income families face on a daily basis. She says participants are asked to live on 3 dollars worth of food each day, which is the amount the average food stamp recipient gets.
Brechtelsbauer says the challenge is a grass roots effort to bring awareness to the problems people face trying to manage and feed a family on food stamps.
Brechtelsbauer says the goal of the challenge is not just to eat on three dollars a day, but to eat healthy. The challenge is sponsored by the Community Food Banks of South Dakota and Bread for the World South Dakota. Sign up for the challenge on line at SDChallenge.blogspot.com.
