Madison Commission Hears Opposition to Proposed Speed Limit Increase

At last evening’s Madison City Commission meeting, residents of Northeast 15th Street brought opposition to an ordinance that would increase the speed limit on the street to 40 miles per hour. An increase of 20mph on the south side of the road. The situation on NE 15th Street is unique because a portion of the street is owned by the city and the other portion is owned by Leroy township. Currently, when traveling on the North side of the road, the speed limit could be read as high as 55 miles per hour, since it is outside of city limits. When traveling on the South side, the speed limit currently reads 20 mph.

Residents of NE 15th Street say they would like to see the speed limit increased to 30mph instead of the proposed 40mph. But, Commissioners say the township board won’t agree to that kind of an increase. They will only make an agreement with the city if the speed limit is increased to 40mph.

The Madison Commissioners agreed to table the matter until the concerned residents of NE 15th Street have an opportunity to address the township board with their concerns for safety.
