Event colors hair, nails pink to support Komen Foundation

The first annual Think Pink event at Salon Etc. in Madison exceeded all expectations.

Stylist Kerrie Meyer said that she, Natae Norman, Katie Ihler and Leslie Wieman didn't know what to expect when they organized the Think Pink event, but the turnout was amazing.

A line of customers waited to get into the salon at 2 p.m. when the doors opened, and the last customers were done by about 6:15 p.m.

Customers had their choice of getting a streak or two of temporary color put in their hair; pink hair extensions; pink nail polish or toe polish; or a paraffin dip.

Food and beverages were provided.

Meyer said about 300 customers came on Saturday for the event, which has so far raised more than $1,700 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support research into the cause of breast cancer.

"We had no idea what to expect," Meyer said.

The event started as an idea about a year ago. As the year progressed, the stylists each purchased a variety of pink products.

While the hair extensions were probably the biggest cost, Ihler's supplier matched her order of 150 extensions with another 150. Faced now with a surplus, Ihler plans to offer extensions on Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. and on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-5 p.m. Meyer said the $5 extensions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Donations will be accepted through the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At that time, Meyer said, their final donation amount will be announced.
