Harvest is over in Miner County and SDSU Extension Specialist Jim Krantz says now is a good time for farmers with cattle to take a look at the calving books and possible fill out their pocketbooks while doing so. He says looking at your calving book can make you money by looking at how many 21 day calving periods you had, and how many calves were born during those periods, because moving one calf up one period could bring an added 30 to 50 lbs. on a calf or $50-60 more a head.
Krantz says along with making more money, he says there are some ways to save money at the same time. He says gettig cows that are thinner at this time, and sorting them off into groups could save some money.
