Dakota State Announces Budget Decisions

Dakota State University in Madison, SD has developed a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year that accounts for a reduction in funding from the state. The budget reflects positions that will not be filled or will be placed on hold until additional financial support is provided or enrollment growth occurs. Due to the information technology (IT) focus of the university and the current high demand for the programs at DSU, no programmatic cuts are being made at this time.

The loss in state support for DSU will be approximately $300,000 and the following decisions will account for the majority of this reduction.

-Computer Science faculty position- hold until additional revenue or programmatic decisions support this hiring

-Director of Marketing -not fill full time position

-IT/Computer help desk- hold professional technical support position

-Athletics - savings from proactive decision to leave Dakota Athletic Conference and become NAIA Independent

-Introductory level math - realign teaching and support positions

Douglas Knowlton, President of DSU stated “Inevitably and regrettably, these reductions will impact our ability to provide optimum levels of support for our students. With the very high demand for our graduates and the resurgence of interest in students with information technology and information systems backgrounds, we must continue to look for effective ways to provide this technology integrated university experience. Whether one is a computer science, business, or teaching major at DSU, this “new era” technology-driven education is crucial to prepare our students for the demands of our new information and knowledge based economy. DSU is a dynamic and innovative institution and we will all work very hard in the face of these decisions to ensure the quality of the education our students receive.”
