Severe Weather Awareness Training and Severe Weather Awareness Week in South Dakota - April 25th through the 29th
Lake, Moody, and Miner Counties will be hosting a severe weather awareness class on Tuesday April 26, at the Lake County Extension building at 1000 S Egan Ave, Madison, SD. This training is open to the public. The training will start at 7:00 pm.
The National Weather Service and South Dakota Office of Emergency Management have declared the week of April 25th through the 29th as Severe Weather Awareness Week in South Dakota. As we all know, Spring and Summer weather in the upper Midwest can often be dangerous and life-threatening. That's why it is our hope people utilize this week to better prepare themselves and their families for severe weather.
As part of Severe Weather Awareness week , a statewide tornado drill will be conducted between 10:00 and 10:30 am CDT (9:00 and 9:30 am MDT) on Wednesday, April 27th. During this time, many of the radio and television stations will be broadcasting this "test" warning, as well as many communities activating their outdoor warning sirens. Upon hearing the "test" tornado warning, we are asking everyone to put their tornado safety plan to the test and then discuss the results of the test with everyone that participated. The drill will also include a test of the Emergency Alert System, which will interrupt local media broadcasts. The scroll on television will look like a real warning, while the audio will be identified as a test.
We encourage everyone to take time during this week to become familiar with weather safety recommendations, so they know how to protect themselves and their families
