The Madison Central School District received the first loan awarded by the South Dakota Bureau of Administration through the State Energy Office in a new program for school energy efficiency projects. The loans are available to K-12 public schools for a period up to 10 years and with zero interest.
The new program run by the state is funded with petroleum violation escrow money the state received as a result of oil overcharges that were litigated in the 1970s. These funds were previously administered through the federal/state energy plan and were subject to stringent federal rules.
Madison Central School District received the $2.2 million loan for improvements and additions it is making to its existing high school including installing geothermal heating and cooling; upgrading windows, insulation, and lighting; and a digital control system to improve energy efficiency.
