Advisory: Wind Chill Warning and Advisory issued for next 24 hours.

As stated in the below warning and advisory from the National Weather Service. This area will be impacted by Arctic air and winds causing dangerous wind chill factors.

Take extra care when outside. Pay special attention to children and pets to ensure that they are either dressed properly or not exposed to the conditions for long periods.

The current forecast indicates that the temperatures will warm up again by this weekend. Temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday night are expected to drop to -12 to -14 degrees below zero. Winds are expected to be around 20 – 30 mph.

Arctic air will continue to flow into the area on strong northwest winds today through Thursday. Wind chills are expected to drop to 20 below zero or colder tonight...with the coldest wind chills at or near 40 below zero expected by Thursday morning north of interstate 90. Winds are expected to decrease Thursday night as arctic high pressure arrives.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Wind Chill Warning...which is in effect from 3 am to noon CST Thursday. A Wind Chill Advisory has also been issued. this wind chill advisory is in effect from 9 pm this evening to 3 am CST Thursday. In addition...a wind chill advisory has been issued. This wind chill advisory is in effect from noon Thursday to midnight CST Thursday night.

  • Wind and visibility...northwest winds 15 to 30 mph.

  • Wind chill values...20 below to 40 below zero tonight into Thursday night. The coldest wind chills near 40 below zero are expected Thursday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.

A wind chill advisory is issued when a strong wind will combine with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for Exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 20 degrees below zero or colder for a period of several hours. Those planning to venture outdoors should dress warmly...making sure that all exposed skin is covered.
