ROWENA, S.D. (AP) - An 8-year-old girl died last night when a car was ripped in half during a collision with an SUV near Rowena, several miles east of Sioux Falls.
Authorities say dense fog and speed were factors in the collision. Both drivers were reportedly going at highway speeds in limited visibility when they met at an intersection. A state trooper says the driver of the car ran a stop sign.
The identity of the girl who was killed has not been released. Another child in the car was seriously injured.
Authorities say too many drivers have been going too fast in foggy and slippery conditions lately.
Fog and ice contributed to more than a dozen cars and trucks either running into each other or veering into the ditch near Canton yesterday on Interstate 29.
