Eight Madison Bulldog tennis players competed in the SD State Tennis tournament under head coach Doug Sims this past weekend and were awarded the 2014 Team Sportsmanship Award. According to the SD High School Activities Association, this award is given to the team that best displays exemplary sportsmanship. The award was created to promote integrity and sportsmanship in the game of tennis, both on and off the court.
In addition to receiving this honor, Madison Bulldog Senior Jacob Leighton received the Spirit of Max Award. The SD Tennis Hall of Fame presented this award, which is dedicated in memory of Max Beeners, who was a student and tennis player at Sioux Falls Roosevelt and passed away in 1999 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Leighton also earned a sixth-place individual finish at the tournament. Madison's Logan Jager competed on the final day of competition and lost in the consolation championship to Nicholas Lust of St. Thomas More. Jager also competed with Matt Graff in doubles and won in the consolation bracket for ninth-place in Flight 3.
Twenty schools competed in the three-day tournament on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2014 held in Rapid City.
