Senate Committee Shoots Down Gun Bill

A state Senate panel has rejected a bill that would have allowed students and others to carry guns on state university campuses in South Dakota.

Rep. Tom Brunner of Nisland offered HB1261. He argued that students would be safer on campus if they could carry guns and defend themselves and others against violence.

Brunner's bill had been earlier passed by the South Dakota House.

It was rejected 7-1 Monday by the Senate State Affairs Committee.

Opponents say such a measure would make campuses less safe. They say when police respond to a report of a gun on campus, they may wind up shooting innocent people who are carrying guns.
