Madison Gymnasts Set National Record

FROM THE KJAM SPORTS DEPARTMENT...

The ending was almost anti-climactic.

After a year of speculation and talk, the Madison Gymnastics team set a new national record earlier today, as it won its 14 consecutive State "A" team championship at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

Madison out-distanced the competition, setting a new State "A" Record of 141.896 points, beating the record it set last year by 3-thousandths of a point. Second-place Britton-Hecla scored 130.028 points, while Milbank finished in third.

The Bulldogs left no doubt in the scoring, taking the top team score in all four events: Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor.

Madison now has sole possession of the national record for most consecutive gymnastics titles, surpassing Sehome High School of Bellingham, Washington.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow with the individual and all-around competitions. Action from the Swiftel Center starts at 10:30.
