Lake County Sheriff Was One of the First on the Scene

One of the first responders on the scene of Wednesday's deadly car-bus accident east of Madison was Lake County Sheriff Roger Hartman. He says some victims had already begun to escape. Those coming upon the crash stopped to help. Hartman said many of the wounded who could get out of the bus were walking around the area, dazed, when he arrived.
A majority of the injured were elderly, something Hartman said made the job of helping them a little more difficult.
The injuries of those on the bus ranged from little to none, to the very serious. At least 16 individuals were air lifted to hospitals in Sioux Falls.
Hartman said many of the injured were immediately assisted by motorists, including one doctor, who drove up on the scene.
