The 140 young musicians taking part in the 41st All-State Music Camp offer a free concert at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 13 at the Performing Arts Center on campus at South Dakota State University. Seventh grade through high school vocalists and instrumentalists have come from three states and worked with SDSU music faculty since Sunday, June 8.
Audiences will have the opportunity to hear a wind ensemble, jazz bands, a symphonic orchestra, and jazz, concert and women's choirs perform what they've learned. Anthony J. Maiello, director of instrumental studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va, is the guest director and will conduct Friday's concert.
Maiello said he's directed the music camp here once before and was honored by the invitation to return. Maiello especially looks forward to Friday's performance of the campers most challenging and well-known piece, Overture to Candide, by Leonard Bernstein.
