Noxious Weeds Costing South Dakota Farmers Millions

Over 4 million acres of farmland in South Dakota are infested with Noxious Weeds, and according to SDSU Extension Weeds Specialist Mike Moechnig, the weeds are causing losses of more than 140 million dollars annually.

Some of the most common weeds in Eastern South Dakota are chicory, Dalmation Toadflax, Yellow Toadflax, Houndstongue and puncturevine.

And according to Moechnig, there is a new weed emerging. European Common Reed, or PHRAGMITES, closely resembles the native common reed found in Eastern South Dakota Wet Areas.

Anyone seeking more information in these noxious weeds is encouraged to access the SDSU Website.
