Madison Woman Injured By Fireworks

Every year officials warn people to be careful, and every year people get hurt. But injuries caused by fireworks can be more serious than you realize. One young woman from Madison learned that the hard way.

Caitlin Iverson was celebrating her Fourth of July at Lake Madison, like many South Dakotan's do, by shooting off fireworks.

But the carefree summer evening soon turned into a trip to the emergency room when a mini-roman candle backfired in her hand.

Chemical burns like Iverson's take longer to heal. Her doctor says the bandages will stay on for a couple weeks. This makes life tricky for Iverson, who's right-handed. Iverson advises, "Read the directions! Read the directions on there; when they say do not hold in hand, they mean it!"
